Practice succession: Taking over a practice – secure, structured and future-focused

The desire for more autonomy, responsibility and stability sooner or later leads many doctors to the question of whether to start up their own practice or take over an existing one as a salaried doctor. Practice succession within the CORIUS Group provides a clear, proven path: you take over an existing practice and take it forward as the medical director.

Instead of starting from scratch, you can build on a well-established foundation – with well-functioning workflows, a trusted team and an existing patient base. At CORIUS, we support you every step of the way. Contact us!

What does practice succession entail?

As part of practice succession, you will assume medical responsibility and leadership of the staff at an existing practice. The previous practice owner will typically pass medical leadership on to you gradually or at a clearly defined point in time.

The handover is well-organised and supported – with the goal of ensuring continuity for patients, staff and medical quality.

Why take over a practice instead of starting a new one?

Taking over an existing practice provides practice successors with an array of advantages:

  • an established patient base
  • well-oiled practice organisation
  • an experienced practice team
  • a clear economic starting point
  • seamless transition of medical responsibility

Unlike starting a new practice, you do not start from scratch – you develop a practice that has already proven itself in day-to-day treatment and care.

The path to practice succession

Get to know us in a video call

We will have an initial consultation to get to know each other. You will talk to our senior recruiter about your specialisation, your expectations regarding practice succession, and your professional goals (video call).

In-depth discussion

In a second conversation, you will exchange ideas with the regional manager responsible for your area and our managing director. This meeting can take place either as a video call or in person and serves as an in-depth consultation to align frameworks, perspectives, and potentially taking on medical leadership.

Shadowing in the practice

A shadowing period will give you insights into the practice’s day-to-day work. You will get to know the team, workflows and medical focus, as well as gaining a realistic picture of your potential future role.

Offer

We will present you with an offer based on our discussions and the shadowing period. This will form the basis for further cooperation and the next step in your practice succession.

Who is practice succession suitable for?

Practice transfer is ideal for doctors who:

  • are looking for a long-term perspective in outpatient care
  • want to take on responsibility and shape medical development
  • prefer not to start a new practice from scratch
  • value structured frameworks

Whether you already have leadership experience or are looking to develop into this role specifically, practice succession provides security and structure in this important step.

Frequently asked questions

The financial starting point for a practice transfer is generally more predictable than when setting up a new practice – revenue, cost structures and patient volume are all already known.
These factors are considered transparently as part of the succession process, allowing you to make your decision based on a realistic economic foundation.

As medical director, you bear medical responsibility for the practice. The network provides extensive support with business and organisational tasks, so you are not left to deal with all business-related issues alone. The exact distribution of tasks will be agreed upon transparently.

Responsible practice succession depends on both sides getting to know each other. The transition phase is expressly intended to evaluate all professional, organisational and personal aspects. The goal is long-term, sustainable cooperation – not a rushed decision.

Yes. Many practice successors come from salaried positions and grow into their medical-management role as part of the practice-succession process.

CORIUS supports your successful practice transfer with a complete, well-structured package: through targeted leadership and management training, close support from regional management and central departments, and involving the previous owners for a seamless transition. A clearly defined onboarding concept also ensures a secure, successful start.
